As might be expected, the mood was happy but whimsical. And the tributes were many. Thurmond's political career--at the upper levels of American politics--has spanned the entire period since the end of World War II, and his importance in the major political shifts of the past two generations can scarcely be overstated. South Carolina and Virginia are the two Southern States with the greatest cultural impact upon the cultural, political and social traditions, of those Americans who consider themselves Southerners, as well as others who identify with the South in either historic or contemporary controversy. But Thurmond's personal importance to post World War II Conservative politics has been largely a reflection of his own intensely practical dedication to achievable objectives.
