October 2002 Edition
October is the month of
Gandhi Jayanti. It is a time when numerous functions memorialize Gandhi
- his statues are garlanded, politicians of all stripes refer to
him as "Mahatma", as "Father of the Nation", or as "Bapuji".
Certainly his role in
the Quit India Movement was crucial and decisive.
But attempts at a critical
examination of Gandhi's record are not usually encouraged; in fact,
they have been systematically proscribed by India's most powerful
opinion-makers. Not only has Gandhi's legacy been presented as something
larger than life, but many finer stalwarts of the Indian freedom
movement have languished in relative obscurity. Gandhi's ideas,
philosophy, tactics, and strategic vision for India have been rarely
subjected to careful scrutiny.
Yet, as India enters a
new century, it is imperative that we examine the man and his role
in the Indian independence struggle with greater objectivity.
Of course, many Indians have argued
that Gandhi was the right man for the times. Women from the upper
middle class, particularly India's housewives, closely identified
with Gandhi's message. Perhaps more than some other leaders of the
Congress, Gandhi recognized the importance of drawing women into
the freedom movement and enjoyed a good working relationship with
many of his women colleagues. Gandhi's willingness to go out of his
way to win over Muslims to the Congress platform also won him friends
and admirers.
