Help, I'm losing my faith!
Studying Christianity and its biblical or theological traditions in any significant depth usually leads to a faith-crisis of some description or another. It's nothing to worry about; it's quite normal.
In the same way as the child approaching adolescence has to deal with the uncertainty of their world - where parents can suddenly be successfully challenged, and school rules can be successfully bent - so our journey into mature faith will involve a crisis of confidence in things once certain.
Any healthy adult has learnt to deal with the contingent role of once revered authorities; we become independent persons capable of navigating life without knowing what will happen next. So any healthy Christian will move beyond the crisis of faith-adolescence into a more contingent, but equally real faith.
As dependence in childhood matures into inter-dependence in adulthood, so simply constructed faith moves into inter-dependent theological thought and practice. The fear created by a realisation of our own independence should not prompt us to regression, but to maturely progress into a less certain belief-system, but a more connected faith in God.
It's faith, in the end, that keeps us going when we don't really know.
