The March 10 2002, L.A. Times article " ORGANIZE OR DIE by Nancy Cleeland, about Carpenters Union president Douglas McCarron seems to ignore and downplay many pertinent facts.
To set the record straight, a major factor that the journalist missed, is that McCarron and other Carpenter union staff people are the employees of the membership of the Carpenter's union. By the systematic manipulation of legal loopholes, a bureaucratic patronage system, political payoffs, and the use of economic and physical intimidation against individual union members and entire locals, Douglas McCarron has created the perfect dictatorship within two democratic nations ( the United States and Canada ). His goal is controlling members dues and pension fund monies and the wages, hours, and conditions carpenters must work with no consultation with the members. The current situation within the Carpenters Union is the only legal situation that I am aware of under contract law, that a party to a contract has no input in regard to the specifics or approval of the contract they are legally bound by. In fact in many areas of the country, un-elected and McCarron appointed Carpenter Union officials refuse to allow working Carpenters to even see the contract they work under.
We pay money through our dues to union officials to represent us. If someone hires an attorney, that attorney is legally required to represent their client or face the possible penalty of losing their law license. Within the"
