Search engine marketing is the use of search engines to promote a website. After the website is finished being developed the webmaster attempts to get it included (search engine submission) in search results.
After the website is listed in search results its rank for different keywords and the traffic it receives from those keywords is monitored. The information is used in conjunction with keyword research tools and competitive analyses to make adjustments to the website in hopes of increasing its rank as high as possible for the most popular search queries (search engine optimization).
Paralleling search engine submission and search engine optimization is the use of advertising systems (search engine advertising) offered by the search engines. Instead of being included in search results the website is displayed above/below/to the side of the search results and marked as being an advertisement.
Viral marketing attempts to produce an advertisement that impacts people in such a way that they tell other people about it (going viral).
Affiliate marketing is the use of an online profit sharing program to generate free publicity and sales. Other people (affiliates) signup to promote the marketer's products/services and in return the affiliates get paid a percent of the revenue they generate. The marketer also gets free publicity even if the affiliates refer non-paying visitors.
Online advertising is the act of purchasing advertising space on any website.
